Industrial dynamics in Japan and Korea : firms’ strategies and public policies

Deindustrialization is a major issue for all industrialized countries, in Europe and in America. This is also the case for Japan and Korea, two countries that have experienced an economic development based on the growth of manufacturing industries and that are particularly concerned by the rise of China in the international division of labor.

The aim of this seminar is to provide various tools of analysis (economic history, international economics, industrial economics, innovation economics, and finance) to study industrial dynamics in Japan and Korea, with a focus on public policies. In 2011-2012, this seminar, which is a part of a three years research program of Fondation France-Japon de l’EHESS (2011-2014) has been organized as follows (8 sessions of 3 hours) :

Session 1 : General introduction ; Session 2 : Industrial development in Japan since the late 19th century : facts and interpretation (industrial policy Vs private actors) ; Session 3 : Korean socio-economic development : overview and historical perspective ; Session 4 : Industrial dynamics in Japan at the sectoral, regional, and micro levels ; innovation and emergence of new industries ; Session 5 – SL : Korean manufacturing dynamics & international regime ; Session 6 – SL : The international regime of Japan : trade relations with China and fragmentation of production in Asia ; innovation and emergence of new industries ; Session 7 – SL : Deindustrialization in Korea ; Session 8 : students’ session.

Moreover, I have organized two conferences on March 15 & 16 and on March 20 & 21. The programs of these conferences are available on the website of Fondation France-Japon (http://ffj.ehess.fr/).
